As a woman who has experienced loss herself, memories always come flooding back. The hurt, the ache, questioning yourself, questioning God, the need for people to be there for you, yet not have a clue what you need them to do. Though these are hard, I’m actually thankful when I’m able to walk a mom/family through it. This means that they reached out. That I could provide the care that they need and be there for them to answer questions. This is actually one of the biggest reasons why I like to see new clients between 6-8 weeks. Most losses that occur happen between 6-9 weeks. However, standard initial appointments for prenatal care start at 10-12 weeks. Women are being left with no established care and trying to walk themselves through loss, and many times ending up at the ER with little to no actually help being provided or questions being answered. I want to be there for them. I want to be someone they can trust to answer their questions. I want to provide practical help, like drawing labs and discussing how much bleeding is too much, doing a gender test for them. I also want to be a calm, solid presence. One they can lean on. One that can pray with them, cry with them, hug them, listen to their fears and worrys and provide a comfort, while pointing them to the ultimate comfort in Christ. I know loss will happen, we live in an imperfect world. It will break my heart every time just as I know it breaks my creators heart.
